Social Development

The social development of a child from birth to age six overlaps somewhat with their emotional development. The following section attempts to highlight some of the characteristics which would be evident in a socially well-developed six-year-old and some factors which contribute to that development. These lists are not meant to be all-inclusive, but rather to highlight some key points.

Characteristics Which Serve as Indicators of Future Success

Some characteristics which would be evident in a well developed six year old in the social domain are included in the following list.

• Ability to recognize an emotional state (feelings) in others
• Ability to empathize
• Has realistic expectations of others
• Can identify differences among peer group and self
• Self-control
• Manners-appropriate behavior for different settings

Factors Contributing to the Development of these characteristics

Some factors which contribute to a child's social development include the following:

• Quality parenting - they are educated and have the necessary skills
• Support system - family and/or other
• Financial stability - resources
• Quality child care
