October 16, 2004 Literacy in the Home: Families Helping Young Children with Disabilities Become Better Readers and Writers (Saturday Workshop)

Learning to read and write is not easy for every child. Come to this workshop to learn how you, as parents, can support your young child with a disability in learning to read and write at home. This workshop will present a variety of ways to motivate and engage your child in reading and writing activities including:

 How to create a home environment for literacy learning;
 How to select books;
 How to read to and with your child;
 How to help your child read on his/her own; and
 How to help your child with writing.

Come join us for a fun, informative Saturday workshop filled with good ideas to help your child at home.

November 9 AND November 16, 2004 Positive Approach to Managing Challenging Behavior - Two Part Series

This series of workshops will describe a positive approach for understanding and dealing with students who demonstrate challenging behaviors.

In Part I of this series, educators and parents will learn the following:

•  A system for collecting and analyzing key information;
•  An understanding of the cause of the behavior;
•  A plan for interventions;
•  Alternative skills to meet the students’ needs.

In Part II of this series, educators and parents will receive an introduction to various positive intervention approaches and strategies which will include the following:

•  Social stories;
•  Communication strategies;
•  Scheduling;
•  Organizational strategies;
•  Social skills.
